Real Sportsmanship

"On Friday we asked for support for our Cross Country team- a young man from Belleville -Dan Castano went above and beyond. One of our young men- Adam Mahabub- fell down and could not continue. Dan stopped running and walked our athlete to the finish line area. Dan is a senior at Belleville High School and was running in the penultimate race of his career. Selflessness and sportsmanship like this is sometimes hard to find- but it’s the expectation at Belleville and the SEC.

Bloomfield High School wishes to recognize and thank this young man and the entire Belleville program. Thanks also to the many teams that offered support on Friday."

On Friday, October 28th, 2016, Belleville High School Senior Cross Country Captain Dan Castano displayed true sportsmanship and selflessness at the Essex County Cross Country Championship Meet. The championships were held at Brookdale Park, where Bloomfield High School Student athlete Adam Mahabub passed out in the middle of the race, and could no longer run.

Dan Castano had to decide whether to finish his second to last cross country race of his high school career or help an injured competitor Adam Mahabub. Dan chose the latter. Dan stopped running and physically assisted the injured student Adam up from the ground and walked Adam to get help.  Dan Castano then stayed with the Bloomfield student to ensure Adam’s safety. Dan Castano did not finish the championship race but accomplished a much bigger goal-helping another human being.

Dan commented “It's just a race. I would put anybody in front of me. It doesn't matter if it's a championship, the Olympics, or anything else. I'll take care of others, whether I end up in first place or in last place.”

Belleville High School Head Boys Cross Country Coach Mr. Nick Campione said, "A special thank you goes to Senior Captain Daniel Castano in his second to last race of his cross country career. Dan did not finish the race because he observed athlete from another team hurt during the race. Dan stopped and helped the athlete reach the finish line and stayed with the athlete as the trainer helped the athlete. This behavior is a symbol of our team as a whole and I am so thankful to Dan for helping the athlete out. Dan showed the well-being of another runner was more important to him than his own race. "

Many people are incredibly proud of Dan Castano for his actions. In fact, Bloomfield High School Athletic Director Mr. Steve Jenkins sent out a mass email to school administrators in Essex County.

The email titled “Real Sportsmanship” from Mr. Jenkins read, “On Friday we asked for support for our Cross Country team- a young man from Belleville -Dan Castano went above and beyond. One of our young men- Adam Mahabub- fell down and could not continue. Dan stopped running and walked our athlete to the finish line area. Dan is a senior at Belleville HS and was running in the penultimate race of his career. Selflessness and sportsmanship like this is sometimes hard to find- but it’s the expectation at Belleville and the SEC. Bloomfield High School wishes to recognize and thank this young man and the entire Belleville program. Thanks also to the many teams that offered support on Friday.”

Assistant Principal/Director of Athletics of Belleville High School Mr. Daniel Sanacore commented,” This is what Belleville Athletics is all about. On behalf of the Athletics department, specifically Coach Campione, Coach Porecco, and Dan’s Introduction to Athletic Training Teacher Ms. Bidoglio, we could not be more proud. Any accolades that Dan Castano receives are all well deserved.”
